Gold (XAUUSD) trades from Sunday 18:00 to Friday 17:00 New York time, with a daily break from 17:00 to 18:00 New York time. Because the hours follow New York, they shift by one hour in GMT when US daylight saving starts and ends:
| New York time | GMT, northern winter | GMT, northern summer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly open | Sunday 18:00 | Sunday 23:00 | Sunday 22:00 |
| Daily break | 17:00 – 18:00 | 22:00 – 23:00 | 21:00 – 22:00 |
| Weekly close | Friday 17:00 | Friday 22:00 | Friday 21:00 |
Your broker's platform may show different numbers because MT4/MT5 servers often run on GMT+2/GMT+3. The hours are the same; only the clock differs.
Forex market sessions
The four main sessions, in each city's local business hours. Gold is most active when London and New York overlap.
| Session | Local hours | GMT, northern winter | GMT, northern summer | For gold |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney | 07:00 – 16:00 | 20:00 – 05:00 | 21:00 – 06:00 | Quiet; the week starts here |
| Tokyo | 09:00 – 18:00 | 00:00 – 09:00 | 00:00 – 09:00 | Ranges; the Asian high and low form |
| London | 08:00 – 17:00 | 08:00 – 17:00 | 07:00 – 16:00 | Volume arrives, often a sweep of the Asian range |
| New York | 08:00 – 17:00 | 13:00 – 22:00 | 12:00 – 21:00 | US data at 08:30 NY; the biggest moves of the day |
Sydney moves its clocks the opposite way to Europe and the US, which is why its GMT hours look reversed.
Best time to trade gold
The London–New York overlap, 08:00 to 12:00 New York time, carries the most volume. US releases such as CPI and Non-Farm Payrolls come out at 08:30 New York time inside it (see the US economic calendar). The London open around 03:00 New York time is the second active window. After 17:00 New York time and through most of the Asian session, spreads are wider and moves are smaller, so many traders mark the Asian high and low and wait for London.
ICT killzones (New York time)
| Killzone | New York time | What traders watch |

| New York AM | 07:00 – 10:00 | US data, the strongest moves for gold |
| London close | 10:00 – 12:00 | Profit-taking and reversals |
| New York PM | 13:30 – 16:00 | Afternoon continuation or reversal |
