Optimal trade entry (OTE)

Also called OTE, golden zone. What it means, how it looks on a gold (XAUUSD) chart, and the mistake most traders make with it.

Optimal trade entry: The optimal trade entry is a pullback into the 62%–79% Fibonacci retracement of a swing, with the 70.5% level as the reference. ICT uses it to time entries deep in discount or premium.

Optimal trade entry: the 62%–79% retracement of the swing (schematic; prices are illustrative XAUUSD levels)

Optimal trade entry on a gold chart

Gold rallies from $4,080 to $4,160. The OTE zone is $4,097–$4,110 (79% to 62% retracement). A long there with a stop below $4,080 risks about $25 for a target back at the high or beyond.

How traders use it

Strongest when the OTE overlaps another level such as an order block or fair value gap.

Common mistake

Forcing an entry when price only retraces 40%. If it doesn't reach the zone, there is no OTE trade.
