For most traders in India, the best time to trade gold (XAUUSD) is from the London open in the early afternoon IST through the London–New York overlap in the evening, roughly 12:30 pm to 9:30 pm IST in the northern summer and about an hour later in winter. That is when volume, spreads and clean moves tend to line up. The worst times are the daily rollover in the early hours of the morning and the minutes around major US data.
Gold trading hours in IST: how the sessions line up
Gold trades almost 24 hours a day on weekdays, but activity follows the major financial centres. India uses IST (UTC+5:30) all year and has no daylight saving. The UK and US do change their clocks, so session times shift by one hour in IST twice a year.
The table below uses common session conventions. Treat the times as approximate, because different sources define sessions slightly differently.
| Session | Local time | IST (UK/US summer time) | IST (UK/US winter time) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asian (Tokyo) | ~9:00 am – 6:00 pm Tokyo | ~5:30 am – 2:30 pm | ~5:30 am – 2:30 pm |
| London | ~8:00 am – 5:00 pm London | ~12:30 pm – 9:30 pm | ~1:30 pm – 10:30 pm |
| New York | ~8:00 am – 5:00 pm New York | ~5:30 pm – 2:30 am | ~6:30 pm – 3:30 am |
| London–NY overlap | — | ~5:30 pm – 9:30 pm | ~6:30 pm – 10:30 pm |
Japan does not use daylight saving, so the Asian session stays fixed in IST.
One trap: the UK and US change their clocks on different dates in spring and autumn. For a couple of weeks each year, the gap between London and New York is one hour shorter than usual. Check a world clock during those weeks rather than relying on memory.
Asian session in IST: quiet mornings
From early morning until lunch in India, gold is often in a narrower range. Liquidity comes mainly from Asian centres, and there is less scheduled US news.
That does not make the morning useless. It is a good time to mark the previous day's high and low, review higher-timeframe charts and manage trades carried from New York.
Many ICT-style traders treat the Asian range as liquidity that London may run later. Whether that helps your strategy is something to test, not assume.
London session in IST: the afternoon open
Around 12:30 pm IST (1:30 pm in winter), London opens and volume rises. Gold often makes its first meaningful move of the day here, sometimes by breaking the Asian high or low before choosing a direction.
For a trader in India, this is convenient: it falls during working hours for many, and the charts are active without the extreme news spikes of the US afternoon.
London–New York overlap: the most active hours for gold
From about 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm IST in summer (6:30 pm to 10:30 pm in winter), both London and New York are open. This is typically when:
- Volume is highest and spreads are usually tight.
- US economic data is released.
- Large directional moves start or reverse.
For many Indian traders this is the prime window, and it suits people with a day job, because it falls in the evening.
We tested London and New York "killzones" as a time filter on our own model. The results were mixed: the filter removed too many good trades that happened outside the windows. So time of day can guide your attention, but it is not automatically a rule. We cover this in detail in ICT killzones for gold.
Gold news times in IST: when to be careful
Most major US releases come out at 8:30 am New York time. In IST that is:
- 6:00 pm IST during US daylight saving time (roughly March to November)
- 7:00 pm IST during US standard time
This slot covers inflation (CPI), the monthly jobs report and several other key releases. Federal Reserve rate decisions are usually announced at 2:00 pm New York time, which is about 11:30 pm IST in summer and 12:30 am IST in winter, followed by the press conference.
Around these releases, gold can move a large number of dollars in seconds, spreads widen and stop orders can slip. A practical approach:
- Check an economic calendar every Sunday and set the times in IST.
- Decide in advance: flat through the release, or already in a trade with a stop placed.
- Avoid new market orders in the few minutes before and after high-impact news.
- If you hold through news, size for the chance of slippage past your stop.

The rollover spread spike: early morning IST
The daily rollover happens at the New York close, 5:00 pm New York time. That is about 2:30 am IST in summer and 3:30 am IST in winter.
Around this time, many brokers pause trading briefly, liquidity is thin, and spreads can widen sharply. A stop placed close to price can be hit by the spread alone, even if the chart price barely moves.
If you hold trades overnight, keep stops at structure rather than a few dollars from price, and do not place new orders around the rollover. Swaps are usually charged at this time too.
Can you trade gold on weekends in India?
No. Spot gold and gold CFDs close for the weekend. Most brokers stop trading on Friday evening New York time, which is early Saturday morning in IST, and reopen on Sunday evening New York time, which is early Monday morning in IST. Exact hours vary by broker.
The main weekend risk is a gap. If major news breaks over the weekend, Monday can open well away from Friday's close. A stop does not protect you from a gap; it fills at the next available price.
If you are new, closing trades before the weekend is a simple way to remove gap risk. If your strategy holds trades for days, that decision should be part of your tested rules.
A simple daily schedule for gold traders in India
- Morning (before work): mark the Asian range, previous day high/low and higher-timeframe levels.
- 12:30–2:30 pm IST: watch the London open for your setup.
- 5:30–9:30 pm IST: main trading window, with news times marked.
- Late night: avoid new trades near the rollover; let stops and targets work.
